A Skill Is Really the Evolution of GPTs: Three Stages of Packaging AI Instructions

System prompts, GPTs, Gemini Gems, Skills — these are essentially the same thing: packaging instructions for AI to use. Duck Editor's take is that they've all evolved in one direction: more convenient, and less for you to worry about.

Duck Editor This is Duck Editor’s opinion, not a tutorial. In my AI Tool Landscape, I put Skills in a special spot — because I think they’re really the evolution of GPTs and Gemini Gems. They sound like three different things, but take them apart and they’re the same thing at heart.


The Conclusion First: They’re Essentially the Same Thing

System prompts, GPTs, Gemini Gems, Skills — all four terms are really describing one thing:

Packaging a set of instructions (or knowledge) so the AI follows them.

The difference isn’t in the “essence,” it’s in how conveniently it’s packaged and how smartly the AI uses it. This line has evolved in just one direction: more and more usable. Let Duck Editor walk you through the three stages.


Stage 1: System Prompts — You Paste Them Every Time

The most primitive approach: every time you open a new conversation, you paste in a long string of instructions:

You are a professional English copywriter, warm in tone, good with metaphors.
Before answering, list three key points, and end with an actionable suggestion…

This works, but it’s annoying. You have to keep that text, remember to paste it, and you’ll mess up if you paste the wrong version. It’s a “manual transmission.”


Stage 2: GPTs / Gemini Gems — Packaged Into an Assistant

Then OpenAI launched GPTs and Google launched Gemini Gems. What they do is simple: package your system prompt into a reusable assistant.

You set it up once, and from then on you just open that “copywriting assistant” and it’s ready — no more pasting. That’s a big step — from “manual” to a “preset automatic transmission.”

But it still has two ceilings:

First, you have to choose. You’ve got 20 GPTs in your list, and every time you have to figure out “which one should I use this time” and open it manually. The AI won’t decide for you.

Second, each is an island. One GPT is a fixed set of settings, and they don’t talk to each other. You can’t have the “copywriting assistant” borrow the abilities of the “data analysis assistant” mid-task.


Stage 3: Skills — Same Essence, but the AI Uses Them Itself

📌 First, which kind of Skill: this article means Anthropic’s official Agent Skills — the kind the AI invokes on its own and loads into context on demand. It happens to share a name with the “hard-coded YAML workflows” in some frameworks (e.g. OpenClaw’s Skill is the latter), but it’s not the same level of thing. Don’t confuse them.

A proper Agent Skill is still essentially the same thing: a package of instructions and knowledge. But it breaks through those two ceilings, thanks to two key leaps.

Leap 1: The AI Can Invoke Them Freely

You no longer have to choose. You can load 50 Skills at once, and the AI decides for itself which one a task needs — it pulls out the copywriting Skill when copy is needed, switches to the research Skill when it needs to look something up.

From “you pick the tool” to “the AI picks the tool.” That’s going from an automatic transmission to a car that reads the road and shifts gears on its own.

Leap 2: Context On-Demand Loading

This one matters even more, and it’s the design Duck Editor finds the cleverest.

The AI’s “context” (how much information it can take in at once) is limited and precious. If you stuff the full contents of 50 Skills into it, just reading all those settings fills up the space before any real work begins.

The Skill solution is on-demand loading: normally the AI only remembers “which Skills I have, and roughly what each can do” — a table of contents. Only when it actually decides to use a particular Skill does it read in that Skill’s detailed content.

Duck Editor Duck Editor’s analogy: It’s like not spreading 50 books open on your desk, but keeping a reading list instead. You pull a book off the shelf only when you need it. The desktop (context) stays clean, but you can summon the whole library any time.


So What’s Duck Editor’s Take

Line these three stages up and a clear pattern emerges:

The essence never changed — it’s always been “package instructions for the AI to use.” What changed is that the ceiling on convenience keeps getting pushed up: from you doing everything manually, to the AI taking over the judgment and dispatch.

This is the shared rule of how all AI tools evolve: hide the hassle in the back, leave the convenience for the user. The system-prompt skills you learn today won’t be wasted — because whether the outside is packaged as a GPT or a Skill, the craft inside — “how to say things clearly for the AI” — is always the foundation.

As for whether Skills will get replaced by something newer? Probably. But once you see this evolutionary line, the next new term that comes out, you’ll see through it at a glance — just another “package the instructions, but more conveniently” upgrade.
